Over the years, we have built a range of eCommerce sites using open source software such as OpenCart and Virtuemart. While we enjoyed working with those, they don't integrate well with Drupal and are not as customizable as we would like.
Drupal Commerce is a completely different animal. It is completely integrated in Drupal 7 and offers true enterprise-class eCommerce and a level of customization that usually gets incredibly expensive to make with other systems. Drupal Commerce is a marketers dream come true. Combined with third party systems such as Google Analytics and MailChimp you have a very powerful eCommerce solution.
Mailchimp enables you to (for free up to 12000 emails/month) communicate effortlessly with all your customers and stand out as unique in their inbox, regardless of how they read their emails. Messages are not interpreted as spam, custom reporting allows you to see who opened the email, how many clicked on your links, and assist in your Return Of Investment (ROI) calculations.
